Horseback Riding
Some of these forested trails have spectacular ocean vistas, and were designed with the equestrian in mind. You can expect to see majestic Sitka spruce trees, lush creek channels, lookout sites, and a reconstructed Native American hunting shelter known as a "hitsi." Over sixteen miles of trails have been completed with additional segments planned. If you are looking for somewhere to hike, we have 20+ trailheads that encompass all skill levels.

The trail provides access to the beach, lakes and vistas for hikers and horse back riders. Baker Beach provides a rustic recreational experience for ocean viewing and horseback riding. If you enjoy hiking or riding horses on trails that take you through coastal vegetation and sand dunes, this is for you. The trails allow access to the beach and to Lilly Lake, providing opportunities to observe and photograph wildlife and picturesque landscapes. This is a unique recreational experience for everyone.
A short segment beginning at the Homestead Trailhead is wheelchair accessible.
Directions: from Florence drive 5.3 miles north on Hwy 101. Turn left on Baker Beach Road and park at the parking area at the end of the road.

Herman Peak Horse Trails |

Both trails, Dry Lake Trailhead and Horse Creek Trailhead are accessible from Herman Peak. These coastal horse trails meander across the forested slopes of Cape Mountain, high above the Pacific Ocean, along Oregon's central coast. From the trails you can glimpse spectacular vistas of the ocean and river valleys below, experience the lush growth of our temperate rain forests, and visit points of interest.
Access the trails at either the Horse Creek or Dry Lake Trailheads. The trailheads were designed for easy access. They are considered easy to moderately difficult. Corrals and water for the horses are available at both trailheads. A ramp for the physically challenged riders is located at the Horse Creek trailhead staging area. Camping and individual pull-through sites and corrals are located at Horse Creek trailhead. Tent sites are located at the Dry Lake trailhead. Both sites offer tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. Bring your own drinking water.
Directions to Dry Lake Trailhead:
From Florence, drive 5 miles north on Highway 101. Turn right on Herman Peak Road and travel 3 miles. Turn left to trailhead staging area.
Directions to Horse Creek Trailhead:
Continue 2.4 miles from Dry Lake Trailhead, or from Florence drive 10.5 miles to Forest Service road 58 (Horse Crk Rd). Turn right on FS58 and travel 4.7 miles. Turn right to access the trailhead and facilities.
