Discover Crabbing
in Florence
Two types of crab are prominent in our coastal waters; The Dungeness Crab and Red Rock crab. The Red Rock crabs are a darker shade of red than the Dungeness Crabs. Both types are highly valued for the sport of catching and the joy of eating. Recreational crabbing is open all year in Oregon.
Dungeness Crabs mature in 1.5 years. They mate from April to September and the female can carry up to 2.5 million eggs under her body. The eggs hatch between January and March.
Dungeness Crabs can live up to ten years and grow to nearly a foot. The Dungeness loves meat of other animals in its kingdom.
It enjoys shrimp, clam, worm, fish as well as most any other animal flesh - dead or alive - they eat it all.
Red Rock Crab biology is similar to that of the Dungeness. Mating is from June to August and the female carries the eggs in the same manner from December to March. Then they hatch from March through May. Red Rock Crabs grow to nearly seven inches.
And once again, the Red Rock Crabs are carnivorous and especially enjoy feeding on barnacles as well as other animal matter.
If you are new to crabbing, here's how to get started.
